Llegamos a KilKenny hacía medio día la guía nos dejó tiempo libre para poder movernos a nuestro antojo, buscarnos donde comer y pasar parte de la tarde.

La ciudad es pequeña, muy bien conservada. Esta llena de monumentos, y se recorre fácilmente a pie.
Casi todo se concentra en el casco peatonal, uno de los más importantes de Irlanda.

Castillo Kilkenny.-

A principios del siglo XIII, un noble normando, William Marshall conde de Pembroke, levantó en este emplazamiento un castillo de piedra, aprovechando la torre ya existente.
Se puede visitar, aunque nosotros no lo hicimos por falta de tiempo, pero los jardines adyacentes si merecen una visita, así como las antiguas caballerizas que están frente a la puerta principal del castillo, reconvertidas en centro comercial.

Enfrente del castillo encontramos las antiguas cocheras y establos, reconvertidos en el Kilkenny Design Centre y la National Craft Gallery, la entrada es totalmente gratuita.

Tras estos edificios se encuentra el acceso a los jardines de la Butler House, es gratuita la entrada, como nosotros fuimos en época prenavideña había montado una decoración muy propia de este momento. Hay tiendas de regalos y souvenirs.

Catedral de San Canice.-

Se construyó en el siglo VI esta catedral, en una colina cercana al río Nore, y fue levantada por el propio San Canice según la leyenda.

Era un abad irlandés que predicó el cristianismo en Irlanda y Escocia.
Kilkenny procede del irlandés Cill Chainnigh, que significa iglesia de Canice, de ahí viene el nombre.

La milla medieval Mile.-

Se trata de un conjunto de edificios históricos de muy diversa condición que se han conservado en el centro histórico de Kilkenny.

Varios de ellos se encuentran en la vía principal, bien en High Street o en su continuación Parliament Street.
La zona es peatonal encontramos callejuelas estrechas, arcos que comunican unas calles con otras y un entramado de pasadizos todo muy bien conservado.

Descubrir este laberinto urbano nos proporciona un buen paseo, y nos va dando una idea de cómo surgió la ciudad, entorno a la iglesia y al ayuntamiento.

El centro.-

En High Street está el ayuntamiento The Tholsel (1761), con su torre del reloj y el corredor porticado con arcos. En los bajos se encuentra una animada terraza donde podemos tomar algo.

Justo detrás del Tholsel está la iglesia de Saint Mary, del siglo XII y tumbas del XVII, que se pueden visitar de forma gratuita.
Es un patío donde encontramos algunas tumbas antiguas rodeadas por unas paredes con algunos elementos arquitectónicos.

En Parliament Street, una de las calles principales está Rothe House, tres casas de estilo isabelino con un patio.

En la acera de enfrente se encuentra The Court House del siglo XIII, y convertido en prisión en el XVI.
Esa misma calle nos lleva a la fábrica de cervezas Smithwick‘s del siglo XVIII, nosotros no entramos, pero por lo que he podido leer alberga en su interior los restos de una iglesia que formaba parte de un monasterio franciscano.

Las Iglesias.-

Nos dirigimos luego hacía la Catedral de Santa María.
Es la catedral de Kilkeny, de estilo neo-gótico está muy bien conservada .
Su interior ricamente ornamentado merece una visita, la entrada es gratuita y de verdad lo recomiendo.

Siguiendo nuestro recorrido fuimos a la abadía Black Abbe, fundada en el siglo XIII.
Se llama así por el hábito que usaban los monjes que la habitaban, de color negro.

Después de esto ya nos dedicamos a las compras, había muy buen ambiente navideño, con varios comercios que tenían muchos detalles de navidad, y luego a de vuelta en bus nos volvimos hacía Dublin.
